Reader questions

What do you mean by general information?

We describe how things typically work, not how they work for you. Individual terms depend on a lender's assessment and on local law.

How can I limit how much I pay in interest?

Borrowing less, choosing a shorter term and settling early where permitted all reduce the interest you pay. Each has a trade-off, so check what suits your budget.

Is a credit score the same as a credit report?

They are related but different. The report lists your credit history; a score is a number some agencies or lenders derive from it. Lenders may weigh them differently.

What is a default?

It is recorded when a borrower has fallen seriously behind on a debt and the lender treats the agreement as broken. It can affect your file for a considerable time.

How do I know a website offering loans is genuine?

Check the firm on your regulator's register and be wary of any request for upfront fees. If in doubt, contact the regulator directly using details you have found yourself.
